The Good News, The Bad…

So we have internet now…  But the cable I wanted to be run wasn’t, because the line tech. isn’t allowed to fish through the walls, so I get to do it as I originally intended, in addition to LAN…  But apparently I’m supposed to have other priorities, so that will all have to wait until after the toilet is done, which will probably wait until after most of the moving is done.

And I’m still leeching, at least until I can get our wireless router set up the way I want it – secured, and I can get the neccessary wireless drivers on to my desktop so I can stop tweaking my back trying to use the laptop.

In any case, I’m beat.  I must have moved about 5-600 pounds worth of books this evening, and I get to go clean some 600 odd M-16A2 rifles tomorrow…  Glee!

Today’s Post…

Is brought to you compliments of some unsuspecting neighbor’s unsecured wireless connection.  People never learn.

Still only half moved in, but most of the important stuff here…  Namely, the computers.  Cable is supposed to get hooked up today, with a new jack in my computer room.  Then, as soon as the faceplates arrive and I find my crimping tool, I’ll be installing LAN drops in the house for my very first time.  Whee!

One of Those Days

Whelp, it finally hit the news tickers, so…  Yeah.  We had one of our jets eat dirt recently with a gear up landing.  Not one of our better days, for sure.  We probably won’t be seeing that one for a good long time, if ever again, as I’m sure you can see if you take a look at the high-rez images available…  Nothing like hitting concrete at ~130 knots with your tail, with the end result looking something like a huge dremel got used on it…  And there’s something not quite right about the nose either.  Kudos to the pilot though – I’d probably have been scared shit-less, but that landing job (despite the lack of gear) looks to be pretty good.

<sigh>  Well, 600 always was a temperamental hunk of junk.

 But aren’t they all?

With the advent of 2.4, and the breaking of all our addons, WoW will most likely be finding a new home – on a shelf.  Our original plan just isn’t working out. Since I broke out of the 51-60 AV bracket with the paladin, PvP hasn’t been quite as fun, and while I enjoy running instances, not having a tank that I know I can count on not to be stupid just doesn’t work out well for me.

All in all, the game was enjoyable for quite some time, but in the end, when only 2 people really make it worth playing, and they release content that, in many eyes, was too little, too late, that also breaks a part of the game that you rely heavily on, it’s probably time to leave.  ESPECIALLYwhen one of the people making it worth playing is your wife, who no longer wants to play at all…  And of course this is the culmination of an on-again, off-again spree which pretty much epitomizes our tenuous relationships with the various MMO’s that we’ve played in the past – and if that’s not enough, take a look at my wife’s character line up.

Granted, of course, this does not mean that leaving the game comes easily, as even the few ties that bind me to the game aren’t easy to break.  One of them will mean the probable loss of a good friend, but with luck, we might be able to keep in touch.  The other is this blog.  While it’s hardly even 6 months old, I feel like I’ve put a lot into it - a lot more than any other web based project I’ve started on in the past, for sure.  I’m not about to let it end lightly.  So, over the coming weeks, after everything is settled down with the house, I plan on making some changes to the site and picking back up on the writing.

Counting Down the Days

Only a few more days (long ones too) and we will own a house, and we should be moving everything in by this weekend.  With any luck, we’ll have our current place cleaned out and turned back over to the people we’re renting it from by the weekend after that, but I get the feeling that switching the utilities over may not go as smoothly as we would like.  We’ll see though.

Reports of My Death…

Greatly Exaggerated.

Things have been rather hectic lately, what with buying a house, working 12+ hour shifts for an ORE and getting ready for other things at work).

While I’m still playing a few hours a day, mostly completing daily quests, WoW is walking the line in our household.  On one hand, I’m enjoying it, despite recent happennings, and I can’t seem to find any other game that offers the same style of PvP that WoW has.  On the other hand, my wife seems rather disillusioned by it.  As a result, we’ve been trying to decide which game to play together while we’re both awake and I’m not at work.  We’ve tried LotRO, and recently gave Tabula Rasa another try, but with little success.  So she’s currently playing CoH, while I continue playing WoW, but it’s not the solution we want.  Hopefully when Age of Conan comes out at the end of May, we’ll be able to go slaughter things together again.

The good thing is that we’ve both recognized which role we enjoy the most – she’s taken her paladin tank and translated it to almost every other game we’ve gone through, and I stick with what I seem to do best – MQoRDPS.

Back in the Saddle Again

Re-upped the main account the other day, but didn’t really start playing on it again until yesterday.  It took me a while to get back in the swing of things, but it’s good to know that there are still a few people that appreciate my skill as a hunter, even as overinflated as their opinion might be.

The 2v2 team is now, once again, literally, 2v2.  Hopefully we’ll be able to pull our score back up now that we’re not trying to juggle.  Being paired with Sheru tended to net us more wins anyway.

Question 1:  Is there a way, a formula, where, given the radius or diameter of the base of a cone, the distance from the base to the peak along the angled edge, and any angles involved, you can calculate the radius/diameter of the cone at any given point within it?  (I think I may have just answered this question by considering it as looking at it like a triangle instead of a cone, but W/E – question still stands.)

Question 2:  Given said above formula, how big would the moon be, if when viewed it was the same size as currently visible in the sky, but close enough for it to be in, say, Low Earth Orbit.

Question 3:  Assuming that density and mass would scale in addition to size using said formula, would the Moon’s gravitational effects remain the same as they are right now, or would they be different?  Would the moon even be able to maintain that orbit?  Or would it crash into the Earth in a cataclysmic collision, killing us all?

 That’s all.

Today’s Random Thought of the Day brought to you by the number B, and the letter 7, and the bald eagle I saw on the way to work.

Curse you, Blizzard!

While apparently my account has run out, despite my original intentions I think I’m probably going to be resubscribing.  Why?  It all boils down to PvP, I think.  While LotRO has PvP (MPvP), it ends up being more like RvR from DAoC, or in a lesser sense, world PvP from WoW.  I find it enjoyable, but I find myself preferring the structured layout of the battlegrounds, despite the gear-dependancy that  it displays.  In the end, each game has it’s pros and cons, and PvP weighs in heavily for me.
